Blog - Superhero of Sweets - Yankee Girl Yummies

Way down south in the yankety-yank, works a talented New York transplant and cookie artist named Kari Arroyo who works under the guise of Yankee Girl Yummies.

In this "Superhero of Sweets" blog you will get to know a little more about Kari's unique spin on cookie decorating and how she gained her superhuman skills. We hope you are as inspired by her work as we are.

How did you get started in cookie decorating?

I got started in cookie decorating almost 6 years ago. I had started baking as a hobby and was asked to do a dessert table for a baby shower. I made a set of cookies to see if it was something that I could do – and I loved it! Been making cookies ever since!

What is your training in baking and cookie decorating?

No formal training. Everything I know came from reading blogs – Sweet Sugarbelle, Bake at 350 and LilaLoa. And then LOTS of trial and error. We've eaten a lot of 'mess ups' over the years.

Do you have a signature style for cookie decorating?

I don't know that I have a signature style. I do love flowers and tend to work them into most of my cookie sets.

Do you have a favorite decorating tip you can share?

I don't think that I could live without my space heater. I set it up on my counter and put my newly decorated cookies in front of it for a few minutes. It has significantly reduced my crater issues.

If you've used Ann Clark Cookie Cutters in projects, can you describe the shape you've used and how you've used it?

I think my favorite Ann Clark shape is the Mason Jar. I love how trendy mason jars are right now! Because of that, the shape can be used in a variety of sets.

Can you share any trends in cookies you envision in the near future?

I feel like cookies have gotten so beautiful and elaborate over the last few years. The cookie community has grown significantly as well. I think this trend is going to just continue – with beautifully decorated cookies infiltrating every social event! Watch out cupcakes!

How has social media influenced your cookie decorating?

I usually start with Pinterest when thinking about a new set. I'll look at images related to the theme – fabric, textiles, cards, etc. and build the set from there!

How do you get inspired for creating new designs?

Butterfly Cookies

I find inspiration in all sorts of places- greeting cards, wrapping paper, fabric stores, home décor stores. The inspiration is endless! I often take a picture with my phone, and file it away for one of my "cookie playtime" days.
