Blog Tie Die Cookies
Perfect for kids' birthday parties or '60s themed parties, these T-shirt shaped cookies decorated with tie-dye designs are easy to make. Here's how to do it:
1. Bake your favorite Ann Clark rolled cookie recipe. Check our recipe section for ideas.
2. Make royal icing. You can use the egg-white recipe below or make royal icing with meringue powder or egg-free royal icing recipe.
3. Decide how many colors you want to work with and divide the royal icing into the appropriate number of bowls. Allow more icing for the color to be used as the background. For the cookies pictured here, I used six colors—pink, orange, blue, purple, with yellow and green as the background colors.
4. Using the background color, pipe a thin line around the edge of the cookies. (I use a parchment paper cone for this, but you could also use a small pastry bag fitted with a small plain round tip.)
5. Thin all the colors of icing with additional water until they are pourable. Add just a little water at a time; you want the icing to be the consistency of heavy cream. Transfer the icing into squeeze bottles if you have them; this makes applying the icing easy and neat. Otherwise, you can use a spoon to pour or drizzle the icing onto the cookies.
6. Using your background color, pour a spoonful of thinned icing onto a cookie, and use a small spatula to spread the icing evenly into all the corners.
7. Pipe or drizzle a contrasting color onto the background color using a spiral pattern, a chevron ("V"-shaped) pattern, or an "S"-shaped pattern, then repeat the pattern with other colors.
8. Draw the tip of a knife or toothpick through the icing to give a tie-dye effect. Starting in the center of the spiral, draw the knife outward, like the lines on a spider web. You can also draw the knife from the edges to the center, and then in a circular motion. Repeat the process with the remaining cookies.
9. Let the icing dry for a couple of hours. At this point the cookies can be wrapped.
