Step 1: Bake and cool cookies before decorating. Make sure cookies are fully cooled. If they are warm, the icing will run off of them. Make royal icing. Learn how to mix different consistencies of royal icing here>>
Prepare the following icing colors:
Light Brown (do this by mixing just a small amount of brown into your royal icing. If it's too dark, add some white to lighten the icing).
Black (you can also use a candy or edible marker instead--see step 8)
Step 2: Using piping consistency yellow icing, outline the pencil. Leave space at the top for the eraser and at the bottom for the pencil tip. Pipe a scalloped edge on the bottom to make your pencil look freshly sharpened.
Step 3: Pipe two lines in yellow piping consistency royal icing, dividing the main part of the pencil into three equal parts.
Step 4: Fill in the two outer sections with yellow flood consistency icing. This will give each side more time to dry before filling in the middle. Wait for them to dry for 30-60 minutes before moving on to the next step.
Step 5: Using white piping consistency icing, outline the erasure holder by created two elongated horizontal ovals. Fill these in with white flood consistency icing.
Step 6: Once the two outer yellow parts of the pencil are dry, flood the interior.
Then, pipe a brown outline around the tip of the pencil and flood with brown flood consistency icing.
Then, pipe the eraser outline in pink.
Step 7: Fill the eraser in with pink flood consistency icing.
Step 8: Using an edible marker or black royal icing, draw a point on your pencil.
And that's a wrap! Pencil in some time during the back to school season to enjoy these cute pencil cookies.
